Hey, everyone. My name is Archie and I'm my girlfriend’s stalker.
I had been with my girlfriend Alice for about 2 years. It’s not that much overall, I guess, but at the time we were 18, highschool sweethearts, renting a tiny apartment near our college. We were complete opposites. She was a ray of sunshine—always bubbly, quirky, singing her made-up songs while cooking breakfast. I have more of an 18-year-old grumpy grandpa personality, but I felt like being near her made me better. That’s why I was in fear of losing her. That’s why it all went sideways.
The story pretty much started about three months ago. We had just moved in, found part-time jobs to pay for the rent. She was working as a barista in a coffee shop. One of those nights, as she was closing the shop, a strange man came in, sat down, and refused to leave. She kept on asking him nicely, but he wouldn’t even look at her. She started calling her boss, but he wouldn’t answer. Then the man started wandering about in the coffee shop, going to the kitchen, near the register, and when she started talking about calling the police, he finally left. After that, Alice was terrified to walk back home. She kept seeing that man’s face everywhere. So after she came home and I managed to calm her down, we decided that we’d share our location with each other all the time. That way, she’d always know that I could find her, no matter what. Well, that turned out to bite her in the ass.
A few days after that, she seemed to be doing well. We had fun at home building a blanket fort and sleeping there. But then, that Monday, she turned into a completely different person and our relationship seemed to be going down the drain. That Monday, she came back home and seemed to be irritated by everything I did. I cooked her dinner and tried to make a little chit-chat about her work, but she said, “I don’t want to talk about it.” I changed the subject to studies, then to family, then to TV shows... Alice just rolled her eyes, told me that she didn’t feel like talking, and went to bed. I wouldn’t have made that big of a deal out of it, but this mood didn’t go away. Alice snuck out really early in the morning as if she was avoiding me. Lately, she had been taking a lot of shifts. She told me that her shifts couldn’t even cover her half of the rent. But not only that, Alice started going out with her co-workers for a drink. One drink turned into another drink and then she’d drive back home drunk. One of those nights, I felt fed up with it. Of course, I was irritated by her behavior. But mostly, I was just… worried. What if she got herself in trouble?
