Hello, everybody. My name’s Prisha and I nearly ended my crush’s life.
But let’s start from the very beginning. My parents were immigrants and all my childhood, I felt a little bit embarrassed by them. This one time, I invited my friend Annie over to my house and the next day, she kept telling everybody how dirty and smelly my home was and how we didn’t even speak English in our home! From that day on, I was “the dirty immigrant.” And that’s the reason I changed everything about myself—my accent, my personality, my clothes. From an outgoing, funny, and cheerful girl, I became silent and shy. But my insecurities led me down a horrible path.
I met Brian in college. We were in the same class—I was the best student, while he was more of a… party-all-night type of guy. I never thought he would notice me. And now I kinda wish he hadn’t, ‘cause my story with him didn’t end well.
Anyway, this one time after class, he took my hand and said, “I want to take you somewhere.” Like, completely out of nowhere. I was hesitant, but he said, “C’mon, Prisha, live a little. You can conquer the world tomorrow.” So he took me to this amazing little park with a small pond and cherry trees. We were walking around and he gave me this whole speech about how he had noticed me the very first day, how he loved to watch me reading books by the tree, how insanely smart I am. And beautiful. No one had really told me that I was beautiful before. That moment right there, I gave him my heart. I wish I hadn’t been that gullible, as he crushed it later on. You see, at first, he treated me like a princess—buying me flowers, leaving little notes in my books... But after, like, a month, he started asking me little favors.
In the beginning, they were insignificant. But it escalated into to-do lists. I was writing college essays for him and cooking every single day. I felt like I was just being a good girlfriend, but history proved otherwise. One night, I was preparing for an exam when I got his text that he had to babysit his little sister, but he really wanted to go to this exclusive party that only happens, like, once a year. I wrote to him, “Sorry, I can’t” and after, like, three seconds, he started calling. As soon as I picked up, I heard a very different side of him. He was screaming, raging, “What kind of relationship is this? You should be happy that I’m with you. I bet nobody has ever even looked at you before.” And at the end of the call, I heard his voice saying, “You people are really ungrateful.” This really crushed me. I broke up with him and spent a month crying in my bedroom, hating myself. I hated that I let some boy treat me like this. I had to know that my love troubles wouldn’t end there, as next time, I would be the one to really hurt a boy. But in a very different, very real way.
