Hey there, I’m Naomi. You know how sometimes you just have to do something? You can’t help yourself, it’s like it’s in your DNA, you’re just programmed to do that thing. And that’s not really a bad thing because it makes you happy, which is good, right?
Well, I had one of those things, but I also had a very different side to my personality and those things clashed a lot, until one day when it was all out of my hands for good...
So, that thing that I just had to do? That was singing. I just loved it so much, I used to sing every chance I got. I played the guitar a little too, so I could make my own music and I liked that a lot. I also used to record myself with my phone when I came up with my own songs because it was interesting to watch the videos back and see what parts actually sounded good, so I could change the songs and improve.
But I kept those videos to myself. That’s the other side of my personality I was talking about. See, even though I loved singing, I was so, so shy. I even found it hard to make friends and talk to strangers, never mind put my talent on display. Really, every time I made a video, I would think how terrible it would be if anyone saw it, and I deleted most of them. I only kept the ones I was really, really proud of, and only for me to see.
But that didn’t last. I made a mistake one day. My friend, Jess, was at my place one day and we were scrolling through some stuff on my phone and taking stupid selfies. I told her to send the selfies to herself using my phone and I got up to get us a drink. I didn’t think about how I was giving her access to everything in my gallery, including my singing videos.
When I walked back into the room, I heard what she was playing – it was me singing. I was mortified. She was so excited though. She started saying she didn’t know I could sing like that, that I was amazing, that most professionals don’t write songs as well as I do. I didn’t care. I was embarrassed and so angry that she had gone through my private stuff. I ripped my phone out of her hands and started shouting at her. Then, instead of listening to me, she picked up her phone and started looking through something. That made me even more mad at her so I kept shouting, and she kept not listening. Then, my phone buzzed. I looked at the screen and it said, “Jess re-posted your video.”
I was confused. I hadn’t posted a video anywhere. I looked up at her and she grinned and said that there’s no use shouting about her looking at it when she’s already showed it to everyone she knows. She’d posted one of my videos on social media. She’d posted it to my account so I was just going to delete it, but I paused when I saw my notifications. People were already liking and sharing it, even people I didn’t know. There were loads of comments about how good I was and the video was spreading like wildfire. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing...
